Description Show
Location: Balsam Lake, Near Coboconk, Ontario

Situated on a big, beautiful lake that’s just a skip and a hop from Toronto, this cottage is a great option for a family with young children. The waterfront has a protected section that is sandy and shallow, making it a good place for toddlers to wade and splash. The grassy expanse leading from the cottage to the lake is quite level, so it’s a nice space to hang out – for children of all ages!

Popular Balsam Lake, on the Trent River system in the Kawarthas, is approximately two hours northeast of Toronto. When you drive to this cottage, the kids will barely have time to ask “Are we there yet?” Upon arrival, everyone will want to head for the waterfront for a refreshing swim or just to relax and enjoy the expansive view. When facing the lake, it’s easy to see the child-safe bathing area at the right. The depth will vary depending on seasonal levels but, due to the sandy lakebed here, a pleasant beach is present when the water is lower.

The large living room windows and sliding glass doors, which open onto a shaded deck, also afford views of the well-treed lawn and waterfront. The L-shaped living/dining space is open concept but the kitchen is in a separate room, situated between the dining area and the main entrance. The kitchen windows overlook the driveway. In addition to the living room, there is a spacious recreation room in the basement that’s equipped with numerous games tables, including ping-pong, foosball and air hockey.

There are three bedrooms in this bungalow-style cottage. All of them are located on the main floor, as is the four-piece bathroom. The primary bedroom, which has windows facing the waterfront, has a queen-sized bed. A second bedroom with a view of the lake also has a queen bed, plus a single-over-double bunk bed. The third bedroom, at the back of the house, is equipped with another single-over-double bunk.

Although Wi-Fi is not available here, the cellular service is very reliable, so guests will be able to use their phone data to access the internet. The cottage is set up with a DVD/VHS player and a large collection of movies, table games and puzzles, making it a good place to disconnect with technology and reconnect with good, old-fashioned fun and entertainment! In addition to the indoor games, there is a basketball hoop and a badminton set for outdoor activities, as well as a canoe and pedal boat.

At this cottage, water-based fun will definitely be a priority. Balsam Lake is famous for having the highest elevation of any lakes on the Trent-Severn Waterway, meaning that it’s all downhill to the ocean from there! Located near Coboconk in the Great Lakes Basin, Balsam is a long, narrow lake, extending 16 km (about 10 miles) by 3 km (2 miles), on average. This lake has two provincial parks on its shores – Balsam Lake Provincial Park and Indian Point Provincial Park, offering numerous recreational opportunities. It sports excellent fishing for both large and small-mouth bass, walleye (pickerel) and muskie, in particular, and anglers report hooking a wide variety of other fish types too. Coboconk has several hiking trails and heritage sites, including Canada’s smallest jail.
