This log cabin is located on north shore
of Big Basswood Lake, Thesselon, Ontario. This picturesque,
inland lake has been rated second cleanest in inhabited Ontario.
Warm and inviting, the cabin is situated on a sandy bay
approximately 1 mile wide. The lake is about 25,000 acres and is
12 miles long by 4 miles wide with the deepest part of the
lake being 250'. This pristine lake has clarity down to 20-30
feet, with lake trout, whitefish and large and smallmouth bass
caught with regularity. (Closed for winter fishing as lake is a
sanctuary lake.)
Water for cabin is provided by an electric
pump from the lake. Although drinkable, there is also a
two-stage filter located under the kitchen sink for dedicated,
pure water for drinking and cooking.
The lot is level to the water with no
rocks or outcroppings, which is ideally suited for small
children. A 40' cedar dock extends into lake and it is four feet
deep at the end of dock. A sidewalk provides access from front
and back of the cabin. Outside of the cabin has been well
maintained with a clear gloss finish allowing the natural
appearance of white pine to be seen.
The cabin is fully insulated. Styrofoam
insulation is between floor joists under the bedrooms and
bathroom. A large floor-to-ceiling splitrock fireplace with
large mantle is centerpiece of the cabin and an airtight
woodburner is located in the opening of the fireplace. Deer have
been hunted in November with the outside temperature in the
teens and the cabin is warm and toasty.
Two bedrooms are located downstairs, along with a den/storage/office. An open stairway with a cedar-root handrail leads to an upstairs loft. An built-in bookcase is located on the outside wall of the loft bedroom which is pleasantly viewed from the lower level. The loft can accomodate up to 8 guests with ample built-in storage and open shelving. All walls and ceiling are natural pine wood and the floors in the kitchen, dining/family area are cottage pine which has been treated with water-based urethane. The bathroom is tiled and other rooms are carpeted.
A 10'x25' screened-in-porch with adjoining deck faces lake, providing many hours of tranquility. The porch has been insulated and walls covered with knotty-pine. There is a separate 16'x28' garage which has a long built in work bench. A large window over the bench provides natural light and a view of the lake. (There is also electric power in garage for a second refrigerator or power tools.) It can easily store a large boat in winter.
A septic system was installed in complete accordance with the Algoma Heath Unit.
This cabin has been a summer home and is
in pristine condition. They are the original owners, but the
time has come, at their age, to pass ownership on to someone who
can enjoy it as much as they have.
